Silicon Carbide (SIC)

Silicon carbide (Chemical formula — SiC), also known as emery and carborundum. It occurs in nature as an extremely rare of the mineral: Moissanite. Black silicon carbide is hard, sharp, and brittle. Silicon Carbide was first prepared in the early 1800s and was in commercial production by 1892, as a powder for grinding and cutting, having a Mohs hardness of 9-10 (almost as hard as Diamond). The grain edges of Silicon carbide are sharp and have a heat transmission capacity. Silicon carbide grains can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramic which used in refractories' production. Silicon carbide can be used as a deoxidizer and high-temperature resistant material in smelting. Also, it can be used to produce refractories and abrasive tools as raw materials, such as ceramic kiln furniture, plate, beam, frame, burner nozzle, grinding wheel, sandpaper, oilstone, grinding head, etc.
